Young kids aged between 2-3 who get private lessons for 30 minutes per week can generally swim confidently within 12 months. Children aged 3+ years taking private lessons for 30 minutes per week can be expected to be able to swim in around about 6 months or about 20-30 hours.

What is the best age to start swim lessons?

The recommended age to start is around four years old. At this age, children have the muscle movements and coordination to learn and be successful at swimming. Whatever you’re age or ability, we’re ready when you are.

Is it difficult to learn to swim as an adult?

This is a great question, but you likely already know the answer: It depends. The short answer is that I've rarely seen adults take longer than two or three weeks-worth of swim lessons to become functional swimmers. And I've never met an adult who couldn't get there eventually.

How many months does it take to learn swimming for adults?

Adults can learn the basics of swimming within a month or two. Obtaining intermediate and advanced skills in swimming takes longer. Being able to swim a mile or two can take months or years. Multiple variables are causing such a broad range.

How many times a week is swimming good for you?

Swimming is a great all-round form of physical activity. It's ideal if you want to be more active and stay healthy, whatever your age or fitness level. A few 30 to 45 minute sessions of moderate to vigorous intensity swimming per week is a great way of working towards your recommended level of physical activity.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE WHILE SWIMMING

You might be wondering ‘why is it important to follow safety rules in swimming classes and lessons’, but they’re there to protect all of us when using the Better pool facilities. Before taking the plunge, it’s important you have the swimming basics under your belt. Here's how you can help everyone swim in a safe and welcoming environment.

What to do:
  • Wait to swim after you eat. Please avoid swimming within two hours of eating.
  • Watch from a distance. Spectators can watch swimming lessons from the designated gallery/viewing area, not from the poolside.
  • Remember to shower before and after your swimming lesson and use the toilet facilities before getting in the pool.
  • Be mindful of your own swimming ability and those around you.
  • Follow lane swimming etiquette – if you’re swimming near a slow or fast swimmer, adjust your pace or switch lane.
  • Listen to our qualified lifeguards and instructors and follow their guidance to keep everyone safe.
  • Swim only when you’re feeling healthy. It’s very important to talk to your doctor before swimming if you have any health problems, and inform staff of any special requirements you may have.

79.0% of children in Eugene Or who reside at a home with a pool, and dont know how to swim, end up with a safety problem. All our swimming coaches are certified with "Swimming safety" program and also hold Local CPR Certification.
